An herbaceous biennial or perennial plant in the Bromeliaceous family grown for its delectable fruit is the pineapple, Ananas comosus. The sword-shaped leaves and needle-like ends of the pineapple plant's rosette are attached to a short, sturdy stem. The leaves might be waxy, solid green, or striped with red, white, or cream. They also have inverted spines on their borders. When the plant blooms, the stalk lengthens and develops a flower head with a cluster of tiny purple or red flowers, each with a sharp brace. The stem keeps growing longer and lays down a "crown"—a clump of little leaves. From the blossoms, separate fruits grow, which then combine to form a single, sizable, cylindric fruit with a crown on top. This fruit, sometimes known as pineapple, has a fibrous, delicious flesh that ranges in color from yellow to white and a rough peel made up of hexagonal units. The height of pineapple can range from 1.5 to 1.8 meters (5 to 6 feet), and some types can live for more than 20 years. The Americas' tropical regions are where pineapple first appeared.
